The Slim-Fast diet is a program for weight loss that says to eat three snacks, two meal replacements and one meal per day. The snacks can be Slim-Fast snack bars or 100 calorie foods, and the meal replacements can be Slim-Fast meal bars, ready-to-drink shakes or shake mixes. The high protein shakes have 50 percent more protein and similar amounts of other nutrients compared to the regular shakes.

Background

You can substitute a Slim-Fast shake for your regular meal up to twice a day on the Slim-Fast 3-2-1 plan. The Slim-Fast High-Protein Extra Creamy Chocolate Shake is a ready-to-drink shake with a serving size of one can, or 12 oz. The High-Protein Chocolate and High-Protein Vanilla come in mixes. To prepare them, mix 1/3 cup of shake powder, or 26 g, with 8 oz. milk. The nutrition information is for the prepared mix with skim milk.

Calories and Fat

Slim-Fast high protein shakes have between 190 and 200 calories per serving. They have 4 to 5 g total fat, and between 18 and 24 percent of their total calories from fat. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends keeping fat intake between 20 and 35 percent of total calories. The high protein shakes have 0.5 to 2 g saturated fat and no trans fats per serving.

Protein and Carbohydrates

Slim-Fast high protein shakes have 15 g protein, or 30 percent of the daily value for protein for someone on a 2,000 calorie diet. The regular Slim-Fast ready-to-drink shakes and shake mixes have 10 g protein per serving. The Slim-Fast high protein shakes have 24 or 25 g carbohydrate with 18 g sugar and 4 to 5 g dietary fiber. According to the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center, fiber can prevent constipation and promote a feeling of fullness to help you eat less.

Sodium and Potassium

According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines, increasing potassium intake and decreasing sodium intake may help you lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk for stroke or coronary artery disease. Slim-Fast high-protein shakes have 220 to 240 mg sodium per serving, or 9 to 10 percent of the daily value. They have a greater percentage of your daily value for potassium, with 16 or 17 percent of the daily value, or 580 to 600 mg, per serving.

Vitamins and Minerals

The shakes provide at least 25 percent of the daily value for vitamins A, C, D and K and most of the B vitamins, including biotin. They have 100 percent of the daily value for vitamin E. The shake mix has 30 percent of the daily value for iron per serving and the ready-to-drink shakes have 15 percent. They have at least 45 percent of the daily value for calcium, and they are high in magnesium, zinc and copper.
