List of Foods with Gluten for Celiacs

Celiac disease is a condition in which people suffer a bad reaction to foods that contain gluten, which is a protein found in various foods. Symptoms that can be seen with this condition include gas, abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss and rashes on the skin. If you have just been diagnosed with celiac disease, it is important to know what foods to avoid to prevent a reaction from taking place.

Barley

Barely is a grain that is high in fiber, protein and gluten. If you have celiac disease, you should avoid this grain and all of its derivatives. Barley malt is an example of this. Rye, bulgur, spelt, couscous and kamut are other types of grains that should be avoided.

Oats

Oatmeal, oat bran and oat fiber are all hot cereals that should be avoided due to the fact that they can come in contact with gluten when they are being processed.

Baked Goods

Breads, cereals, pie crusts, pizza crusts, doughnuts, scones, biscuits, pastries, waffles, pancakes, cookies, cakes and crackers are all types of baked goods that should be avoided. They are often made with wheat, rye and other grains that can cause an outbreak of symptoms.

Pretzels

Pretzels are a snack food that contains gluten. Any form of pretzels such as whole wheat or pumpernickel should be avoided.

Pasta

Pasta is much maligned for its high carb content. It is one of the first foods to go when it comes to following a high protein diet. If you have celiac disease, you should follow this path and not eat it because it has gluten. This goes for any type of pasta including macaroni, spaghetti and rigatoni.

Alcohol

Hard liquors like scotch and vodka do not contain gluten, but beer does. This is because it is created from various grains that all contain gluten. This goes for all forms of beer, including lagers, ales and light beer.

Condiments

Soy sauce is a condiment used to dip sushi in and to coat rice. It should be avoided because it has gluten. So do tamari soy sauce and veggie burgers made with soy.

Seitan

Seitan is a meat alternative that is derived from wheat. It is made into an assortment of imitation meat products like sausage, meatloaf and bacon. Seitan contains gluten.

Ingredients

Any product that you buy in the store has a chance to have gluten in it. Avoid products that have brown rice syrup, caramel color, malt flavoring, malt vinegar, hydrolyzed vegetable protein or dextrin.
