Ear congestion occurs due to the accumulation of fluids behind the ear drum and is a common complication of bacterial middle ear infections. Sometimes, the fluid remains trapped behind the ear drum even after the infection has run its course. Ear congestion can cause pain in the ear, effect hearing and make it difficult for the child to fight new infections. Most doctors adopt a wait and see approach before prescribing medications for ear infections. However, several simple steps can be taken at home to relieve ear congestion and provide relief to the patient.

Warm Compress

A bottle filled with warm water or a warm bag of salt can be pressed against the ear to get relieve the ear congestion and the pain associated with it. The New York Times Health Guide states that traditional methods like these can help ease ear pain.

Valsalva's Maneuver

Valsalva's maneuver is a simple technique that is used to relieve the stuffy feeling associated with ear congestion. The procedure which is performed as follows help open the Eustachian tubes that connect the middle ear to the throat.

The child is takes a deep breath and closes his mouth.
The child's shuts his nose firmly with his fingers and simultaneously blows it gently.

The University of Maryland Medical Center warns that it is important not to blow the nose too hard. Also, this technique should be only if the fluid and ear congestion persist even after the infection has been cured and should be avoided if the child has an active ear infection.

Natural Ear Drops

Several kitchen ingredients have been traditionally used to allay earache and ear congestion. Although none of these techniques have been proven to be scientifically effective, they may provide relief. A few drops of a mixture of hot sesame oil and garlic juice in the ear may be a useful home remedy. Natural Home Remedies also recommends putting a few drops of warm extra virgin olive oil, mustard oil or ginger juice into the ears for ear congestion relief. If fever is present or pain is severe, a doctor should be consulted first.

Swallowing

Regular swallowing is a simple technique that may help to open up the Eustachian tubes and drain the excessive fluids that cause the stuffy feeling associated with ear congestion. Drinking large amounts of fluids such as water and juice, and chewing gum are some easy ways to promote regular swallowing. Fluids will also increase the blood volume and thereby support the ability of the immune system to fight ear infections, which are the major cause of the congestion.
