Acid reflux, medically known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a condition that occurs when stomach acids move past the esophageal sphincter into the throat, according to the Penn State University website. People with acid reflux typically experience chronic burning sensations in the throat or chest, particularly after meals. Difficulty swallowing is also a common symptom of acid reflux. Certain foods and beverages may worsen this condition.

Check with your doctor before changing your diet to manage acid reflux symptoms. Dietary changes should not be used in place of medical attention.

Fried and Greasy Foods

Foods that are high in oils, particularly those that are deep fried, may trigger or worsen the heartburn and other symptoms associated with acid reflux, according to the Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology website. Avoid french fries, onion rings, fried chicken, deep-fried fish and other greasy foods. Foods naturally high in saturated fats, such as ground chuck, steaks, pork chops, bacon and ham may also trigger symptoms.

Peppermint

According to the Penn State University website, foods and beverages containing peppermint may relax the esophageal sphincter. This may increase the risk of stomach acids penetrating the lining of the esophagus, producing pain and other acid reflux symptoms.

Dairy Products

Dairy products, especially full-fat products such as whole milk and cream, may trigger acid reflux symptoms, according to the Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology website. Also avoid creamed soups and high-fat cheese, sour cream and cheese curd.

Alcoholic Beverages

According to the Penn State University website, beverages containing alcohol may irritate an inflamed esophageal lining, which can worsen the burning sensation associated with acid reflux. Limit or eliminate beer, wine, liquor and other beverages containing alcohol.

Other Beverages

Other common beverages may trigger esophageal burning in people with acid reflux, according to the Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology website. These include coffee, tea, soft drinks and other beverages containing caffeine. Fruit juices, particularly those made from citrus fruits, may also worsen symptoms.
