The colon is the last part of the digestive system, and it is responsible for the absorption of water and minerals and the formation and removal of feces. The colon contains healthy bacteria that aid in digestion, maintain healthy pH levels and prevent harmful bacteria from forming. Chemicals, additives and toxins in the foods you eat can disrupt the gentle balance in your colon and lead to sluggish digestion, constipation, toxic buildup and disease. Although there are colon-cleansing products on the market designed to remove toxic waste from the system, the best way to keep the colon clean is through proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
Step 1
Eat a diet of organic fruits and vegetables and whole grains, which are high in fiber and promote good digestion. Whenever possible, eat fruits and vegetables raw. Include small amounts of organic lean poultry and wild-caught fish in your diet. Try to avoid meat, as it often contains additives and hormones that can disrupt your digestive system. If you must eat meat, choose grass-fed beef from a reliable source.
Step 2
Consume organic sources of probiotics or take an organic probiotic supplement. Probiotics contain good bacteria that help to keep the colon clean. The National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine recommends these food sources of probiotics: yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk, miso, tempeh, and some juices and soy beverages. Keep in mind that non-organic dairy products may have been treated with harmful growth hormones and additives that can be toxic to the colon. If you are lactose intolerant or do not eat soy, you can take an organic probiotic supplement, which will provide the same good bacteria found in food sources.
Step 3
Avoid eating foods that are processed or refined and that contain sugar and saturated fat. Junk foods and fast foods are the leading cause of poor colon health, according to Dr. Lynn Hardy, founder of the Global College of Natural Medicine. Eliminating these foods from your diet will greatly improve colon health and digestion.
Step 4
Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of filtered water per day. Proper hydration is an important part of cleansing the colon. Dehydration can lead to constipation and disrupted digestion. Do not drink unfiltered water; it may contain chemicals that can be toxic to your digestive system.
Step 5
Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Exercise helps flush toxins from the lymphatic system before they reach the colon, according to colon hydrotherapy therapist Michele Shohatovitz.
