If you've had one before you'll never forget it. The overwhelming urge to urinate followed by the disappointment and frustration of not being able to go once you get to the bathroom. You leave, only to have the urge again a few minutes later. The itching and burning don't help either. Yup, it's a urinary tract infection.
The Causes
Urinary tract infections, or UTI are caused by bacteria entering the urethra and moving to the bladder. The tract becomes irritated, inflamed and painful. If left untreated, the germs can move to the kidneys, causing more serious infections.
The Signs
Urinary tract infections can be mild or severe with symptoms ranging from barely noticeable to extremely painful. Strong urges to urinate combined with an inability to fully do so, are the most common indicator. Urine may also have an unusual smell or even have blood in it, notes the the National Kidney Foundation.
Treatment
These infections are most often treated with a short course of antibiotics. If you think you have a urinary tract infection, it's always best to check with your doctor for confirmation and treatment.
Prevention and Natural Remedies
Keeping yourself hydrated with plenty of water, avoiding tight underwear, taking showers instead of baths and decreasing caffeine intake may help prevent a UTI. The site also recommends drinking cranberry juice, using cinnamon and taking vitamin C supplements to fight off an infection in its early stages.
Alternative Therapy
Acupuncture, an alternative therapy using needles inserted along the body's meridians, may be helpful in curbing recurrent infections of the urinary tract.
