About Gazelle Supra Exercise Equipment

Most models of the Gazelle exerciser are almost identical. They all feature a strong X- or Z-shaped frame that supports two hanging pedals. You step into the pedals and swing your legs back and forth in an arc. Small handlebars jut up from the pedal supports; push or pull on the handlebars to help yourself along and get an upper body workout at the same time.

The discontinued Gazelle Supra was available in a base model -- the Supra -- or as the Supra Pro, which the same machine with only a minor change in the optional hydraulic resistance.

Description

Both Gazelle Supra models are built on a sturdy X-shaped metal frame. The pedals are suspended from a crossbar that you can hold onto for support if necessary. Once you feel stable, you can push and pull on the forward-leaning handlebars that jut up from the crossbar. The foot platforms are designed for rear entry only; you step in from the back of the machine.

Features

The primary difference between Gazelle models is their range of minimalist features. The Gazelle Supra and Supra Pro both have a basic computer with a thumb sensor to measure your pulse, mounted in the center of the crossbar. They also come with a workout video, a water bottle and water bottle holder. Neither Supra model has the soft-glide cables offered on some Gazelle models, which offer a springier ride.

Hydraulics

Both Supra models also come with optional hydraulics to make your workout more challenging. The Gazelle Supra has only two hydraulic settings: They're either fully engaged or not at all. The Supra Pro has four hydraulic resistance settings. You adjust the resistance by clipping the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder closer to the pedal supports for less resistance, or further from the supports for more resistance.

Exercises

Once you enter the machine, mount the pedals and begin striding, you can alter your body position to shift which muscles you work the most. Bending your knees as you glide increases the emphasis on your thigh muscles. Lifting up onto your toes as you glide works your calves. You can also tilt your entire body forward as you glide, increasing the load on your chest, shoulders and arms, or tilt back to emphasize your back, shoulder and arm development.

Availability

The Supra models were originally sold through Sears and Kmart. They retailed for about $250 and were backed by a 90-day warranty.

Specs

The Gazelle Supra models support up to 325 lbs., and measure 42.5 inches long by 30 inches wide by 54 inches high. Like other Gazelle models, they fold flat for storage when not in use.
