No matter your goal or eating habits, there's a diet that fits everyone. When evaluating which type of diet is right for you, Healthyweightforum.org recommends keeping several different aspects in mind, including, calorie intake, nutritional requirements, medical conditions, practicality and ease of use. It is also important to consider whether you are looking for short or long-term results and make sure that the diet will fit in with your lifestyle.

Low Calorie Diets

Healthyweightforum.com reports that diets that work by restricting calories generally recommend that you eat between 1,000 and 1,500 calories per day. To put those numbers in perspective, Allspiritfitness.com reports that an average 130-pound female adult needs 2,000 calories per day to maintain her current weight. Calories should be added or subtracted from that number depending on activity level and weight loss goals. One pound of body weight equals 3,500 calories, according to dietbites.com, so to lose one pound per week you would need to burn an extra 500 calories per day, consume 500 calories less, or a combination of the two. Often low calorie diets will come in the way of restricting the type of food that you eat, including eliminating entire food groups. Diets that do this or that fall into the class of low calorie are the Atkins Diet, Protein Power Diet and the South Beach Diet.

Good Nutrition Diets

There are many diets that revolve are eating healthy foods in order to lose weight. These diets generally do not eliminate any food groups and focus on creating programs that have you eating a healthy balance of whole-grains, lean meats, fruits, vegetables and healthy poly and monounsaturated fats. Usually processed foods, refined sugars, saturated fats and trans fats are discouraged. The meal plans in these diets are beneficial in helping you change your eating habits; usually meals and recipes that encompass these healthy foods are included and act as an easy to follow guide. Diets that fall into this category are the Sonoma Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the Zone Diet, the Mayo Clinic Diet and the Abs Diet.

Prepackaged Meal Diets

Prepackaged meal diet programs require that you buy that particular company's food. The food is usually pre-made and often frozen, requiring little effort on your part. These diets are easy in the sense that you do not have to figure out for yourself what to eat and how much, you simply pop a prepared meal into the microwave. These diets are designed to teach your portion control and to show how much or little food you actually need to consume in a day, until eventually you learn how to shop and cook for yourself. Diets such as this include Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, BistroMD, Medifast and Nutrisystem.
