If you perform exercises that include a balance of cardio and muscle-toning exercises, you will lose weight in a healthier manner than just by doing cardio alone. Building muscle can help you lose fat faster even while you are resting. According to the University of Maryland, a strength-training study showed a seven percent increase of the participant's resting metabolic rate. It also showed prevention of common illnesses in the elderly, such as colon cancer, gallstones, diverticulosis, constipation and hemorrhoids.

Kettlebell

"Fitness" magazine states that kettlebell exercises are a recommended way to lose weight. Kettlebells are a cast iron ball with a handle on it and they weigh about 10lbs to 45lbs. Buy one that is lighter than what you would normally use when lifting free weights so that you do not strain your wrist. A kettlebell routine is similar to a slower cardio workout, yet it keeps your heart rate up.

Try raising the kettlebell above your head with one hand, keeping your arm straight. If the bell is in your right hand, side step toward the right. With each step, move the bell from right to left. Repeat for five steps. Switch the kettlebell to your left arm and repeat for five steps to the left. This will workout your arms and obliques.

Develop a balanced routine so that all of your muscles in a similar area get evenly toned. For example, if you are exercising your obliques, also exercise your front abdominal muscles along with your lower and middle back muscles.

Dance

Dancing can be a healthy and expressive way to lose weight. If you have ever noticed how lithe a dancer's body is, it is because they do intense dance workouts involving aerobic elements and muscle-toning elements that push their muscles to their maximum potential.

If you have no dancing experience, try an aerobic dance class at a gym. Make up your own routine to your favorite music and dance outdoors. For more of a challenge, use wrist and ankle weights or take professional dance classes.

Water Exercises

Exercising in water is an excellent way to get a workout that provides you with aerobic and resistance training. If you are sensitive to chlorine, do water exercises at the beach or lake. Chlorine from swimming pools can cause irritation to your eyes, nose and throat. According to the EPA, "No information is available on the carcinogenic effects of chlorine in humans from inhalation exposure."

To exercise in a lake, use a floating board and kick until fatigued. You can water ski to exercise your arms, legs and core muscles. If you are near a beach, try surfing to get a full-body workout.
