Kayaking is a fun way to spend time outdoors in nature, while remaining active. The action of paddling a kayak provides an effective upper-body workout. Based on the nature of kayaking and the snug fit of a kayak on its paddler, finding the right fit can be a challenge. Trying to paddle a kayak that does not fit properly can be frustrating and potentially dangerous. Following a few guidelines will help you find a kayak that fits just right.

Step 1

Measure your height and weigh yourself so you will have accurate stats to compare as you shop.

Step 2

Find a style of kayak that suits your needs, whether they be river, ocean or lake kayaking. Read the spec sheet about weight maximums and gear storage to determine if you should bother trying it out.

Step 3

Sit inside the cockpit of the kayak. Place your feet on the footrest. Your knees should be bent slightly and touching the underside of the deck, and your back should be straight.

Step 4

Press your low back into the backrest and feel for adequate lower-back support. Rotate your upper body from side to side to determine if you can move freely when paddling.

Step 5

Notice any modifications you will be able to make if you decide to purchase such as adding foam padding under the deck where your knees touch or other comfort changes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Insist on a test run with the kayak before you agree to purchase.
