Thermogenic Effect
The science of weight loss is actually very simple. If our bodies take in fewer calories than we burn, we will lose weight. However, a deficit of 3,500 calories is needed to lose just one pound of body weight. The two ways to achieve caloric deficit are to decrease the calories taken in and/or to increase the calories burned. The thermogenic effect is when our bodies generate heat, which raises our metabolic rate to burn more calories.
Weight loss pills contain ingredients that can increase thermogenesis to speed up the rate of weight loss. For example, EGCG, an antioxidant in green tea, has been shown to increase resting metabolic rate by four percent. A greater increase of the thermogenic effect may be achieved by utilizing the synergy of green tea with caffeine. Since you are burning more calories, your dieting and exercise efforts become more efficient, allowing you to lose weight faster.
Appetite Suppressants
Appetite is hard to control because food cravings are both psychological and physiological. Decreases in blood sugar signal the body to stimulate appetite. However, when trying to consume fewer calories, cravings are a major obstacle to success. Weight loss pills contain natural appetite suppressants such as hoodia gordonii and Citrimax or garcinia cambogia. 5-HTP, an amino acid precursor to serotonin, is showing promise as an effective appetite suppressant. Higher serotonin levels trick the body into feeling satiated and able to ward off food cravings. Certain fibers can also suppress appetite by expanding in the stomach and causing a feeling of fullness.
By decreasing the amount of calories ingested, appetite suppressants help us to increase the amount of weight we lose. FDA approved weight loss appetite suppressants include Meridia and Phentermine.
Diuretics
The rapid weight loss that occurs soon after starting any diet plan is usually due to water loss. Many weight loss pills also have a water-loss or diuretic effect. Natural diuretics include caffeine, parsley, apple cider vinegar, grapefruit, uva ursi, buchu, doggrass, cornsilk, hydrangea root and juniper extract.
Shedding excess water from under the skin can help to achieve that toned, lean look that many covet. At the same time, it is very important to drink extra water because our bodies lose water as a result of exercising and dieting.
Blockers
Some weight loss pills block certain nutrients from being absorbed in order to lower the amount of calories taken in. For example, white kidney bean extract may inhibit amylase, the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of carbohydrates. By preventing excess carbohydrates from being digested, total calories are decreased. Chitosan works in a similar way, naturally blocking fats from being digested. FDA-approved weight loss pills Xenical and Alli also block lipase, the enzyme responsible for fat metabolism.
Fats are calorie-dense nutrients, carrying nine calories per gram. Therefore, blocking even a small portion of ingested fats from being digested can significantly lower total calories and contribute to weight loss.
