List of Bariatric Surgeons in New Jersey

Bariatric surgery, also called gastric bypass surgery, facilitates weight loss. Two of the methods are adjustable gastric banding and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Adjustable gastric banding involves putting an adjustable silicone band around the upper stomach to reduce food intake. Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass, which can be done by traditional surgery or laparoscopic surgery, includes stapling a portion of the stomach and creating a bypass from the newly reduced stomach to the small intestines.

Monmouth Medical Center

The team of registered nurses, dietitians, and others at the Bariatric Surgery Program at the Monmouth Medical Center is led by Dr. Frank Borao. A leading laparoscopic surgeon, he performs standard gastric bypass surgery. Barao is one of few doctors in New Jersey to implement a new kind of surgery, called Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal, or ROSE for short. ROSE is used for people who have already had gastric bypass surgery, but it hasn't worked because their stoma and stomach pouch have stretched out again. Rather than undergoing an additional invasive surgery to return the stoma and stomach to their original size, people can undergo the incision-free procedure during which the doctor inserts an endoscope through the mouth and esophagus, and is able to restore the stoma to its post-surgery size.
