Orthopedic Pillows for Neck Pain

Neck pain affects nearly everyone at some time in their lives. Neck pain can last anywhere from several hours to several weeks or longer. Most neck pain is not serious and is attributable to muscle strains from leaning over a work table or computer. Orthopedic pillows can help provide relief from neck pain.

Causes

In addition to strained muscles that result from normal activities, neck pain can be triggered by whiplash injuries sustained in rear-end vehicle accidents. These injuries take place when the head is abruptly moved backward and forward. The jerking movement stretches the soft tissues of the neck past their limit.
As you age your neck joints experience wear and tear. This deterioration may cause osteoarthritis (chronic breakdown of cartilage in the joints) in your neck resulting in pain and stiffness.

Symptoms

The symptoms of neck pain may include stiffness in the neck accompanied by a sharp or dull type of pain. You may have trouble following your daily routine due to discomfort in your neck. Sometimes the pain will extend to your shoulders and back.

Orthopedic Pillows

Orthopedic pillows are recognized for their therapeutic uses and the comfort they provide for a restful night's sleep. Most orthopedic pillows are adjustable and and conform to the neck or other targeted area and ease pressure points. The Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT) says orthopedic pillows ensure proper support to the neck and spine areas.

Neck Pillows

According to Healthguide.org, the orthopedic neck pillow is formed like a horse shoe and is specifically designed to accommodate the neck. This secure fit keeps the neck from tilting too far backwards. It is commonly used by neck pain sufferers as well as by travelers who sit on planes or trains for many hours at a time.

Replacing Pillows

Orthopedic pillows should be used for no longer than two years before being replaced. Their beneficial effects may be lost by repeated wear and tear as they lose their original shape, firmness and overall supportive purpose.

Additional Treatments

In addition to orthopedic pillows people with neck pain may benefit from placing a warm bottle or heating pad on their neck or by taking a hot shower and allowing the water to run along your neck for a few minutes. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs may help relieve neck pain.
