"Out of sight, out of mind" can work for your diet efforts. The truth is that the more junk food you have around, the more likely you are to reach for it when you're hungry or bored. On the other hand, if you don't have a bag of potato chips in the house, chances are you won't go out at 10 p.m. to buy one, no matter how much you want it. Buy as much healthy food and as few sugary or high-fat snacks as you can, so you won't be tempted by it.

Step 1

Use the top shelves. The harder it is to reach for the food, the better. If you have high shelves you can only reach with a step-stool, put the food you're trying to avoid there. Then put the stool in a different room, so it's even more work to reach for it.

Step 2

Buy more healthy foods, such as whole grains, nuts and cereals. Put that toward the front of the cabinets and hide less-healthy options behind it. This makes it more likely that you'll pick the foods that are better for you and easier to reach.

Step 3

Store food inside cupboards rather than on open shelves or the counter. Don't leave anything out in plain sight. For food that goes into the fridge, use color containers instead of clear ones so you can't see what's inside.

Step 4

Freeze foods you don't want to be easily accessible. According to North Dakota State University, almost anything can be frozen, including snacks, desserts and even drinks. That way, the food is not accessible quickly.
