Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride) is a medication prescribed to treat depression and generalized anxiety order, and its 60mg caps are the strongest dosage available. It can also treat fibromyalgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Cymbalta is categorized as a serotonin-norepinephrine reputake inhibitor (SNRI).
Function
Cymbalta, like other SNRIs, increases levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. This relieves symptoms of depression and anxiety. Cymbalta also seems to block pain signals from traveling through nerves to the brain.
Types
Cymbalta is available in 20mg, 30mg and 60mg capsules. The medicine should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed. It can be taken with or without food.
Dosage
Doctors usually prescribe Cymbalta at 60mg per day for all health care conditions, which might be divided into two or three smaller doses. A doctor may advise starting with a smaller daily dosage. Doses above 60mg per day are not recommended.
Side Effects
Cymbalta is associated with certain side effects, the most common being insomnia. Other side effects may include changes in appetite, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, sweating, tremors and urination difficulties.
Warning
Antidepressant drugs, including Cymbalta, have been shown to increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in children, teens and young adults. People who take Cymbalta for a prolonged time can experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop taking it suddenly.
