Glen Bell opened the first Taco Bell in 1962 in Downey, California. By 1970 Taco Bell had gone public, and in 1978 Glen Bell sold 868 Taco Bell restaurants to PepsiCo Inc. and became a shareholder in the Pepsi company. In 1997 Tricon became the parent company of Taco Bell. Throughout the years, as Taco Bell has grown and expanded, they've introduced a variety of foods to the menu.

Tacos

Tacos are soft or hard shells filled with meats, cheeses and vegetables. Taco Bell offers a variety of crunchy and soft tacos. The original beef Crunchy Taco has 170 calories, while the beef-filled Taco Supreme, which contains sour cream, has 200 calories. A beef Soft Taco has 210 calories, the chicken-filled Soft Taco comes in a bit lower at 190 calories and the Crispy Potato Soft Taco, which is filled with potato bites, pepper jack cheese sauce, cheddar cheese and lettuce, has 260 calories. The Grilled Steak Soft Taco and the Chicken Ranchero Soft Taco have between 250 and 270 calories and the Double Decker Supreme contains 360 calories.

Burritos

Burritos are soft tortillas stuffed with meats, cheeses, beans, rice and at times sour cream, guacamole and a variety of sauces. Taco Bell has a wide variety of burritos available on the menu. The Grilled Stuft beef burrito has a whopping 700 calories, while the Grilled Stuft chicken or steak burrito contain between 640 and 650 calories. Burrito Supreme burritos are slightly lower in calories; the beef Burrito Supreme has 420 calories, the chicken has 390 calories and the steak Burrito Supreme contains 380 calories. The 7-Layer Burrito has 510 calories and is filled with rice, beans, three kinds of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. Both the Bean Burrito and the Chili Burrito have 370 calories, and the 1/2-lb. Combo Burrito has 450 calories.

Gorditas and Chalupas

A gordita is flat bread filled with meat, cheeses and vegetables; chalupas are crispy chalupa shells filled with cheese, vegetables and meat. The Taco Bell Baja Beef, Steak and Chicken chalupas contain between 380 and 410 calories each. The Nacho Cheese Chalupa, with beef, has 370 calories; those with chicken contain 340 calories and the steak Nacho Cheese Chalupa has 330 calories. The Chalupa Surpremes, filled with chicken, beef or steak, have between 340 and 370 calories.

The Cheesey Gordita Crunch has 500 calories while the Nacho Cheese Gorditas that contain chicken, beef or steak have between 260 and 290 calories. The beef Gordita Supreme is filled with beef, three cheeses, sour cream, lettuce and tomato and has 300 calories, and the chicken and steak versions both have 270 calories.

Other Items

Taco Bell offers a variety of side-dishes, low-calorie and specialty foods to its customers. The Taco Bell chicken quesadellia has 520 calories, the steak quesadellia has 510 calories and the cheesey quesadellia contains 470 calories. If you'd like to add a side to your meal, the Pintos 'n Cheese has 170 calories, Mexican rice has 130 calories and the Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes contain 270 calories. The Fresco menu offers low-calorie foods including a crunchy taco that has 150 calories and the Fresco Grilled Steak or Ranchero Chicken soft taco, with between 160 and 170 calories.
