Scars can form for a variety of reasons; burns, cuts, punctures and residual acne scars are the most common. They can be embarrassing if they are located on a visible area such as your face, neck or hands. Modern technology affords us the luxury of getting rid of unsightly scars; often over the course of a few days. Chemical peels, dermabrasion, lasers and punch excisions are a few ways to remove scars in a week.

Step 1

Have a chemical peel done by a dermatologist. This procedure can get rid of scars in a week or less. During treatment, your dermatologist applies chemicals to the scarred areas to burn away damaged skin. The top layers of your skin are peeled away, as well as the visible scars with it. A scab forms on the skin within one day of treatment and you are provided with a topical cream to alleviate redness and promote healing time.

Step 2

Schedule a dermabrasion treatment . This methods is done with a sharp, rotary brush and crystals, which remove the top skin layers. Scars are removed with the skin and you may have some redness afterward. Results are immediate with this drastic procedure, but inflammation and swelling are common side effects. This is usually healed after a few weeks and your dermatologist may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.

Step 3

Have laser resurfacing treatment on the affected areas. A laser is used to eliminate scars and even skin tone around the scar. It also helps flatten the surface to match the unaffected, surrounding skin. Laser resurfacing provides some immediate results, but more severe scars may require multiple treatments. You may have mild redness or inflammation for up to a week after treatment, but this is often relieved with topical analgesics.

Step 4

Receive punch excision for extremely severe scars. For this method, a surgeon removes the skin on the surrounding skin of the affected area. This area is stitched up the so that old scars can heal to a softer, uniform appearance. It may take up to three weeks for your skin to recover after punch excisions, but this procedure is usually done only one time. Your doctor may want to do a skin graft from another part of your body, to replace the excised skin.
