Elliptical machines have surged in popularity. Their smooth, fluid motion provides a low-impact, high-intensity workout, which helps to burn additional calories. Unlike its cousin, the treadmill, you feet never leave the pedals, helping to reduce injury as well as the amount of stress and pressure on your joints, back and legs. Because elliptical trainers can be expensive, you'll need to shop around to find one that best fits your needs and budget.
Step 1
Research and know what type ellipticals are available. There are three main designs; the front-drive elliptical, the rear-drive elliptical and the center-drive elliptical.
Front-drive ellipticals have the driving mechanism in the front and are cheaper to manufacture. According to Elliptical Machine Guide, they are also harder to clean and maintain, due to all the mechanical components. When purchasing a front drive elliptical look for a model with articulating foot pedals, this will ensure a larger range of motion and provide more support.
Rear -drive ellipticals are generally more expensive and have the driving mechanism in the back. They provide a smooth, fluid workout comparable to running or jogging.
Center-drive ellipticals are the newest design and have their drive system in the center of the machine. With the weight of your body centered in the middle of the machine, it provides a more natural workout and encourages better posture.
Step 2
Test the stride length of the machine. Most low-end ellipticals, according to SmoothFitness.com have a stride length of 16 inches, perfect for short legs but uncomfortable for taller people. It recommends a stride length of 18 to 20 inches if you are average height or slightly above average height and a stride length of 26 inches if you're taller than average.
Step 3
Decide what options are most important. Higher end models may include a built-in cooling fan, adjustable incline, pulse and heart rate monitor, and programmable workouts. Some include a small LCD display to view your favorite movies.
Step 4
Visit a fitness specialty store. Unlike department stores, fitness specialty stores usually have multiple machines assembled and on the floor that you can test. Their staff is also more knowledgeable about exercise equipment in general.
Step 5
Pick a price range you are comfortable with and stick to it. Prices can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Know what you are getting for your money and don't overpay for options you will never use.
