Waxing removes hair for up to three weeks, according to DermNet NZ, making it an ideal option for anyone who wants to remove hair for extended periods. Waxing removes hair in large and small areas, and a precise application creates a clean line, as is the case with eyebrow waxing. Other areas commonly waxed include upper lip, chin, legs and the bikini area. Although it is more common for women to wax, men also use wax to remove hair from their brows, chest and back.
Step 1
Dampen a cotton ball with skin cleanser. Cleanse the waxing area to remove all makeup, dirt and debris. Do not rinse. Blot the area dry with a terry cloth or unused cotton ball.
Step 2
Open the container of wax. Place it in the microwave, and heat on high for 1 minute. Stir the wax with the wooden craft stick to check for fluidity. If the wax is not fluid throughout, heat for an additional 30 seconds, repeating until the wax melts completely.
Step 3
Spread a thin layer of wax on the skin in the direction of the hair growth.
Step 4
Press a wax cloth down into the wax. Grasp the bottom corner of the cloth with your thumb and first finger. Hold the skin taut with your free hand, and pull the cloth off quickly against the hair growth, keeping your hand close and parallel to the skin.
Step 5
Dampen a cotton ball with wax remover or baby oil. Gently rub away excess wax.
Step 6
Tweeze away any remaining hairs.
Tips and Warnings
- Some wax cloths are coated with a thin layer of wax on one side. To use these cloths, simply press the cloth to your skin, wax side down, and pull off against the hair growth. Cut the wax cloth with a pair of scissors to wax small areas or shape the eyebrows. Check the temperature of the wax on your wrist to avoid burns.
- You should not wax if your skin is irritated, broken or sunburned. If you take oral retinoids or use topical retinoids, you should also avoid waxing as these medications weaken the skin, which may result in tearing, bruising and scarring. (reference 2) Never wax the same area twice. Remove remaining hair with tweezers.
