Almost everyone is afflicted with acid reflux from time to time; however, certain people experience this condition chronically and prefer to use alternative remedies for relief. Apple cider vinegar alters the stomach's pH, helping to neutralize acids that may lead to heartburn, according to "The pH Miracle." Using apple cider vinegar in one or several preparations is a quick, easy method of controlling the pain and discomfort of heartburn. If pain persists or worsens, consult your health practitioner.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Foods

The easiest way to use apple cider vinegar to control stomach acids is to apply it liberally on salads. Its affect is felt more strongly when it is used uncooked. Use 2 tsp. to 2 tbsp. added to salad dressings or apply it straight.

Another way to use apple cider vinegar as a remedy is to substitute it in recipes that may call for other kinds of vinegars. Bean salad makes an excellent side dish or snack and keeps in the refrigerator for up to a week. Cook and drain 2 cups mixed legumes and drain. Finely slice one onion and add to the beans. Make a vinaigrette dressing by combining 2 tbsp. or more of apple cider vinegar with olive oil. Pour over the beans and onions, mix, and allow to stand at least two hours before serving.

Make pickles and replace whatever vinegar is called for in the recipe with apple cider vinegar. Eat pickles daily with meals or as a snack; the vinegar should help reduce heartburn symptoms by changing the stomach's pH.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Water

Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar in an 8 oz. glass of water and drink during meals to relieve acid reflux, suggest Dr. Theodore Baroody, in "Alkalize or Die." If the vinegar is too strong, the amount can be reduced and slowly increased over time.

Straight Apple Cider Vinegar

Some people prefer to sip straight apple cider vinegar while others drink it all down at one time, says Baroody. If it is too strong this way, it should be mixed with water as described above.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey

Mix 2 tbsp. each of honey and apple cider vinegar together in a small bowl or cup and sip the mixture to alleviate symptoms of acid reflux, suggests "The Acid Alkaline Balance." The honey is high in potassium, which helps to neutralize stomach acids, according to "The pH Miracle."

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda

Pour 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar into a tall glass. Add 1/2 tsp. baking soda. It will foam and bubble furiously. Allow all foam to subside and add 6 oz. water. Drink the entire mixture immediately to obtain relief from acid reflux symptoms. A balanced pH of seven is created when mixing these two substances together; and the drink helps neutralize digestive acids and establish a balanced pH in the stomach, according to "The pH Miracle." Baking soda can raise the blood pressure, so people taking medicines for hypertension should consult with their health practitioners before using this remedy.
