The American Academy of Dermatology says acne, also called acne vulgaris, can occur at any age, but is most common in teens and young adults. Around 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from acne. Fortunately, there is a number of vitamins, minerals and supplements that help to reduce and prevent acne.
Zinc
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, zinc is an essential trace mineral that is found in every cell. Zinc contains antioxidant properties and protects your cells from free radicals. Some studies have suggested that taking an oral zinc supplement may help to treat acne. There is some evidence that shows using a topical form of zinc in combination with a topical antibiotic erythromycin is helpful in preventing acne.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and is used in combination with carotenoids to help keep the protect tissue of your skin strong. It helps to prevent acne from forming by reducing the production of sebum, natural oils on your face, according to Dr. George Obikoya of the Vitamins & Nutrition Center. Vitamin A also helps to repair your skin if it is damaged. Vitamin A helps the body deal with oxidative stress, which is known to be a contributing factor to acne.
B Vitamins
There is a variety of B vitamins that can be used to stop acne. Riboflavin/vitamin B12 is used to help keep your skin healthy. Low amounts of riboflavin in the body may result in acne. Panthothenic acid or vitamin B5 is used to help your body deal with stress. Also, a lack of niacinamide/vitamin B3 and pryidoxine or vitamin B6 may result in acne formation.
