How to Strengthen Your Immune System

The immune system is the body's protective network of cells, organs and tissues. The elements of this network work together to fight foreign invaders of the body. These foreign invaders are germs and microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the immune system is normally highly efficient and provides multiple defenses against invaders foreign to the body, and in normal circumstances it is difficult to enhance. However, there are steps you can take to strengthen and protect your immune system during illness or when faced with chronic disease.

Step 1

Add antioxidants to your diet by consuming more fruits and vegetables. These are good sources of antioxidants, which remove free radicals from your bloodstream and help boost your immune system.

Step 2

Take a multivitamin daily and ensure there are adequate nutrients in your diet. Micronutrients improve the activity of T cells and their accompanying transport cells, improving the immune system's ability to fight invaders.

Step 3

Alter your diet to reduce the amount of animal protein and saturated fats in it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, lowering the amount of red meat in your diet is particularly important, and suggests having red meat in your diet no more than once every 10 days.

Step 4

Walk briskly 20 to 30 minutes five days per week to help protect and strengthen your immune system.

Step 5

Reduce the amount of stress in your life with counseling, meditation or removing yourself from stressful situations. The hormones associated with stress suppress the immune system. Try yoga or Tai Chi to help you to reduce your stress levels.

  • Free radicals can come from exposure to cigarette smoke or environmental pollution. Removal of these free radicals can help boost your immune system.
