When the pH of the body becomes acidic, a state of acidosis is established, leaving the person prone to disease, according to Felicia Drury Kliment in her book, "The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet." Altering the body's pH is possible by consuming certain foods and drinks and eliminating those that create problems. Kliment explains when the body's pH is slightly alkaline, many conditions and diseases are unable to survive and the body's systems are able to maintain their energy and equilibrium. Creating a routine of consuming alkaline-forming foods may help reduce disease symptoms and alkalize the body.
Step 1
Drink 1/2 tsp. baking soda in an 8 oz. glass of water to alkalize the body, according to Drugs.com. Baking soda can raise the blood pressure, so if you take medications for hypertension, consult your health practitioner first. Up to 4 tsp. per day of baking soda is considered safe for those with normal blood pressure.
Step 2
Use healthy fats like those found in avocado, olive oil and flax seed oil, which are all alkaline-forming and help change the pH, suggests Kliment.
Step 3
Eat foods high in potassium to help establish an alkaline pH in the blood and urine, suggests "The pH Miracle." High potassium foods known to alter the pH are lemon juice, raw organic honey, apple cider vinegar, cream of tartar and ripe bananas. Total-Health-Care.com states fresh lemon juice in particular may be helpful in creating an alkaline state in the body. Add these foods to your diet whenever possible.
Step 4
Eat parsley and alfalfa sprouts whenever the opportunity presents itself. Both of these vegetables are highly alkaline themselves, and contribute to altering the body's pH.
Step 5
Add amaranth, quinoa and millet to your diet. These ancient grains are high in protein and contain nutrients that make them alkaline-forming when eaten, says Dr. Theodore Baroody in his book, "Alkalize or Die." Eat three grains separately or combine into one dish. Baroody suggests substituting them for highly processed foods made from white flour and genetically modified grains, which contribute to acidosis. The ancient grains are available in health food stores.
Step 6
Use cream of tartar to create an alkaline state in the body. Baroody recommends taking 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar in an 8 oz. glass of water for emergencies like nausea, severe headaches or extreme states of anxiety. He explains that cream of tartar has the ability to alkalize the blood and works almost immediately to reduce various unwanted symptoms. He goes on to discuss that when the individual is under great stress, their bodies may become more acidic, leading to the development of conditions that produce pain and poor health.
Tips and Warnings
- Bananas should be very ripe, with some brown spots on the skin. Green or yellow bananas create acidosis, according to Baroody.
- Too much alkalinity can be as much of a problem as too much acid in the body. The ideal pH to protect the body should be about 7.5, says "The pH Miracle." Eating a well-balanced diet containing alkaline-forming foods and eliminating foods that are known to be troublesome, like junk foods and highly processed foods is the best way to maintain a healthy pH.
