If you live in an environment that gets a lot of snow during the winter, it can be difficult to prepare your baseball team for the upcoming season. When the spring rolls around, snow might still be covering your baseball diamond or it might be too muddy. Inside baseball drills in a gym can help your team start practicing.
Target Practice
A fun inside baseball drill you can practice is similar to a game that is played at the local fair. You can stack up some cans at one end of a gym and have players stand at the other end. Have the players practice throwing rubber baseballs at the cans. The players can throw baseballs at the target from various distances. Your players can also compete with one another to see who can knock over the most cans.
Quick Toss Hitting
This drill can improve your players' speed and accuracy when hitting. To practice this drill, one player stands next to the plate with a bat. Another player kneels down on the opposite side of the plate and rapidly tosses baseballs over the plate. The batter tries to successfully hit all the balls into a small backstop. The thrower should keep track of how many balls are hit into the backstop. When the hitter has taken a swing at all the balls in a bag, the players then switch positions. The new batter can try to hit more baseballs than his partner.
Infielder Reflex Drill
This reflex drill can improve your players' skills at quickly fielding ground balls. To practice this drill, you need to set up two bases on the gym floor. Line up the players halfway between the two bases. Lead the first player in line to one of the bases with a ground ball. You can throw or hit the rubber baseball to the players. The first player must catch the ball and then tag the closest base. The player must then throw the ball to the second player in line, who should now be covering the other base. Repeat the drill with the next two players in line.
Pepper Drill
The pepper drill is classic way to practice bunting and fielding. To play pepper, have a few fielders spread out in front of a batter. The drill begins when one fielder tosses the baseball to the batter. The batter bunts the rubber ball down on the gym floor to one of the other players. This drill continues as players repeatedly catch and toss the bunted ball. Challenge the players to keep this drill going as long as they can without missing a catch or bunt. To increase the difficulty of the pepper drill, you can have the players try to play with two baseballs at the same time.
