Active Ingredients in NyQuil

NyQuil is a brand of cold and flu medicine that is available in both liquid and liquid capsule forms. Available in several different preparations, including NyQuil Cold & Flu Relief Liquid and LiquiCaps, NyQuil Cough, NyQuil Sinus LiquiCaps and NyQuil Alcohol-Free Cold & Flu Relief Liquid, the active ingredients in each formulation vary slightly.

NyQuil Cold & Flu Relief Liquid and LiquiCaps

The active ingredients in these two formulations include acetaminophen, 325 mg, which relieves body aches and reduces fevers. Dextromethorphan, 15 mg, is added to aid in cough suppression. Doxylamine succinate, 6.25mg, is an antihistamine that helps decrease sneezing and congestion.

NyQuil Cough

To treat a cough without other symptoms, NyQuil has a cough-only formulation. The ingredients in NyQuil Cough are similar to the Cold & Flu Relief liquid, omitting the acetaminophen and including the dextromethorphan and doxylamine succinate. The dosages of these ingredients are 15 mg and 6.25 mg respectively.

NyQuil Sinus LiquiCaps

NyQuil Sinus LiquiCaps is formulated for sinus symptoms, such as runny nose and nasal congestion. This product contains acetaminophen 325 mg, doxylamine succinate 6.25 mg and phenylephrine HCL 5 mg as a decongestant.

NyQuil Alcohol-Free Cold & Flu Relief Liquid

For individuals sensitive to alcohol, or for those who elect to avoid it, NyQuil features an alcohol-free version. This formulation includes acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg as an antihistamine and dextromethorphan.
