Overview

Dealing with acne while breastfeeding can be challenging because many medications are not recommended. Proactiv, which contains the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide, is considered safe for use during breastfeeding. However, women should talk to their doctor before beginning treatment.

Step 1

Talk to a doctor about using Proactiv. Most physicians will support a breastfeeding woman's decision to use Proactiv because the active ingredient is considered safe. However, if a woman is using other medications or topical agents, a physician may ask a nursing mother to wait until she has finished nursing her baby.

Step 2

Wet your face with warm water.

Step 3

Place a fingertip-sized amount of the facial cleanser on your palm and massage it into the face using a circular motion. Continue the massage for 60 to 90 seconds.

Step 4

Rinse the face with warm water and dry using a clean towel.

Step 5

Drizzle a small amount of the toner on to a pad. Rub the toner all over the face, focusing on areas that tend to be particularly oily. Allow the toner to dry.

Step 6

Spread a thin layer of lotion over the entire face, focusing on areas that are particularly dry. Let dry. Do not remove.

Step 7

Repeat these steps morning and night if your skin tolerates the treatment well. If itching or redness occurs, use the treatment only once daily.
