A neck brace, also known as a cervical collar, is used for a variety of neck ailments, including whiplash and cervical spondylosis. If your doctor tells you to wear a neck brace, she may give you additional instructions. Although wearing a neck brace may feel uncomfortable, if you are wearing it correctly you will get used to the pressure it places on your neck and feel supported while wearing it.
Step 1
Wash your hands and your neck with antibacterial soap. This will prevent the neck brace from getting dirty.
Step 2
Lie on your back and, without moving your neck or head, gently roll your body to the side so there is enough room to slide the bottom piece of the neck brace under your neck and center it. Have a partner help you if you are unable to put it under your neck yourself.
Step 3
Keeping your neck in line with the rest of your body, roll your body back into your starting position, on your back. Slide the front section of the collar under your chin, so your chin is resting in the divot in the center of the collar. The front portion of the brace should be pulled high enough that there is no pressure on your collarbone.
Step 4
Fasten the collar. On some collars, you will need to angle both ends of the front of the collar so they are snug underneath the ends of the back of the collar. If there are straps on your collar, fasten the straps on both sides of the collar and snap or Velcro them in place.
Step 5
Clean any foam pads on the neck brace once a day with a clean washcloth and mild antibacterial soap. Clean any plastic areas of the brace once a week with a clean washcloth and mild antibacterial soap.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have long hair or a beard, clear the hair from the neck brace before closing it.
- If your doctor has given you any alternate instructions for wearing your specific brace, follow them exactly.
