Several factors can contribute to the swelling and puffiness that you sometimes wake up with in the morning. Bags under the eyes usually occur when too much fluid has accumulated under your eyes during the night. Other causes of bags may be an allergic reaction, menstruation, aging, lack of sleep, heredity or a serious illness. Luckily, there are several options available that can improve the appearance of bags under the eye area.
Step 1
Splash your face with cool water in the morning. Cool water stimulates circulation of the blood so that the fluids that have accumulated under your eyes are distributed throughout your body. Cold water also helps reduce the swelling.
Step 2
Chill a spoon in the refrigerator. Place the cold spoon over your closed eyes for a few minutes to help reduce the swelling.
Step 3
Avoid drinking any liquids close to your bedtime. Drinking a large amount of fluids before you go to sleep increases your chances of fluid gathering under your eyes while you sleep.
Step 4
Prop your head up with extra pillows. Elevating your head will prevent fluids from accumulating and causing bags under your eyes. You may also choose to prop up your entire mattress as well.
Step 5
Brew a couple of green or black tea bags. Place the tea bags in the refrigerator until they are cool. Cover your eyes with the chilled tea bags for about 15 minutes. The caffeine in the tea will tighten the skin under your eyes to help reduce swelling.
Tips and Warnings
- Get an adequate amount of sleep every night.
- Talk with your doctor if the problem persists as this may be a sign of a serious health condition.
