Many runners set their sights on completing a marathon as an ultimate accomplishment, but some runners prefer to take it farther, running races of 50 or even 100 miles. According to the website UltraRunning, ultrarunning is defined as running distances longer than the 26.2-mile marathon. Ultrarunners in New York City are in good company, as they can choose from a variety of ultrarunning clubs and events in the area.

In the Self-Transcendence race, ultrarunners complete 3,100 miles in 52 days. The club, founded by spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, promotes self-reflection through running.
