How to Find the Right Foods for a Diet

With the availability of thousands of different types of diet plans, you might be well-versed in diet lingo and knowing what types of food go with which diet plan. It is more of a task to be able to find the sometimes odd ingredients and foods that are integral to some diet plans. Diet plans are diverse, and while you'll be able to follow one with things you buy at the supermarket, another diet plan may require specially purchased foods. Find the right foods for a diet by visiting retailers and specialty stores to get the right combination of foods.

Step 1

Study your diet plan of choice. Most diet plans have companion books that speak about philosophies and give sample grocery lists or specific foods to buy for the regimen. Look for helpful and easy guides such as meal and snack plans that fit your own diet plan.

Step 2

Make a list of things that you'll need to find for the diet plan that you've chosen. For instance, for the South Beach Diet, you'll write down a variety of healthy proteins, such as nuts and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. List stores where you can find the items. For instance, nuts and chicken can be purchased at a supermarket. Flaxseed may have to be purchased at a specialty store.

Step 3

Search your regular grocery store for the right foods for your diet. This will most likely be the cheapest way to buy diet foods, so whatever you can find on your neighborhood store's shelves may save you money and trips to health food stores or specialty shops. Shopping at your neighborhood grocery may save you money as well.

Step 4

Browse a local health food or organic food store for ingredients that aren't available at your neighborhood supermarkets. Flaxseed, certain herbal teas and supplements can be found at health food stores. The items may be slightly more expensive, but if those ingredients are pivotal to your diet plan, you will want to have them.

Step 5

If your diet plan calls for food prepared by a diet company, be prepared to order that food Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig and Dinewise all require participants in their plans to eat packaged food portioned and manufactured by their respective brands. Your order will be delivered to your home.
