Salicylic acid is a medication included in face washes, spot treatments, lotions and other skincare products to fight acne and skin conditions such as psoriasis, according to Medline Plus website. Using a salicylic acid facial cleanser correctly can help to reduce the incidence of problem skin conditions.
Function
Salicylic acid is a member of the beta hydroxy acid family and is extracted from willow bark, according to 3D Chem. When applied to the skin, salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent, according to Medline Plus. This means that the acid works to reduce the amount of oil in the pore, thus helping to "unplug" blocked pores in those with acne. Salicylic acid also can soften loose, scaly patches of skin, such as patches from psoriasis.
Application
When used as a cleanser, salicylic acid is commonly sold over the counter in a two percent salicylic acid solution, according to Acne.org. However, your physician can prescribe a stronger salicylic acid solution face wash if you are not experiencing your desired results. Begin by moistening your face with warm water, then gently massage the cleanser on your face. Avoid your eyes, nose and mouth when washing your face. Rinse off the cleanser with warm water, then gently towel off.
Time Frame
Salicylic acid face wash may require several applications in order to experience results, according to Medline Plus. After several weeks, you should begin to notice skin improvements, such as a reduction in blemishes or scaly, dry patches.
Side Effects
When initially applied to the skin, salicylic acid may cause irritation, according to Medline Plus. You may notice your skin becoming more dry or red. These symptoms should subside as your skin becomes more acclimated to the treatment. However, if extreme dryness occurs, reduce the amount of face washed used or the frequency of which you wash your face until side effects reduce.
Pregnancy Dosage
During pregnancy, what you put on your face can be absorbed into your skin and bloodstream --- thus going in to your baby's bloodstream, according to Baby Center. Salicylic acid is not recommended for us in pregnant women in oral and chemical peel forms, which allow the acid to be absorbed into the skin. However, when used as a face wash, salicylic acid should be safe for use. This is because of the small amount used and that the medication is not left on the face for an extended period of time.
