Optifast is a type of weight loss therapy designed to assist obese individuals lose excess weight. Optifast is offered by physicians who are trained in obesity management. Numerous medical weight management centers across the United States, Canada and Australia offer Optifast services and products under the supervision of licensed dietitians, physicians and other health care experts.
Step 1
Locate an Optifast clinic in your area. Meet with the physicians and dietitians who will discuss your weight loss needs and goals. You will be given an initial lifestyle and medical evaluation, then continuous medical monitoring of your health during the process of losing weight.
Step 2
Replace your meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with the Optifast soups or shakes during the active phase of the Optifast program. The active phase is the beginning of the program where you will only be consuming Optifast meal replacements, such as the shakes, bars or soups. This phase could last up to 12 weeks, depending on your diet needs and what you have discussed with your Optifast provider. Hunger usually goes away in one week.
Step 3
Prepare yourself for the six-week transition phase. During this phase, Optifast will be replacing just two meals. Your dietitian will help you prepare one low-calorie meal which is around 500 calories. This meal will include two cups of low-starch green vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, green beans, asparagus and leafy greens. Two liters of water will also be included every day.
Step 4
Prepare yourself for the maintenance phase of Optifast. During this phase, Optifast replaces just one meal every day. Your dietitian will show you how to prepare two low-calorie meals to eat. The meals will include two liters of water and two cups of low-starch vegetables that are green.
Step 5
Enjoy the stabilization phase. During this period, your weight loss goals have been achieved and you no longer need to replace your meals with Optifast. You will be eating healthy low-calorie meals that are around 1,500 calories to maintain your weight loss. Your Optifast physician and dietician will still offer you advice and monitor you so that you can maintain your weight loss. However, your Optifast health experts may tell you to use Optifast periodically if you do go above your healthy goal weight.
