Located less than 20 miles from Monterey Bay, Salinas, California has a rich history, mild climate and a bounty of fruits and vegetables. Seniors living in or around the Salinas area have several choices in activities. Recreation centers, museums and health clubs are only a few of the ways to stay active.

City Organized Senior Activities

The City of Salinas organizes activities for seniors at the Firehouse near Skyway Boulevard. They sponsor a wide variety of activities including bingo, yoga classes and coffee clubs. Seniors can also access special services for tax preparation, address food bank needs and receive health insurance counselling at the Firehouse. The city also organizes arts, crafts and computer classes. Computer access is available to seniors at the center should they need it.

Parks and Other Center Activities

Salinas has over 20 parks scattered throughout the city. Parks are a good place to meet people, take a stroll or sit and enjoy a nice lunch. There is an exercise park specifically for seniors located on Central Avenue. The Salinas Public Library maintains an active calender of events and wonderful volunteer opportunities. The Community Building Circles at the Hebbron Family Center offer an interesting way to take part in community visioning activities.

Museums and Historic Centers

The John Steinbeck House and the John Steinbeck Center are both located in Salinas and offer full calendars of events. Salinas Valley Model Railroad Museum shares the history of the first steam trains to be utilized in the Monterey and Salinas areas. The Salinas Valley Memorial Health-care System sponsors the Museum of Medical History which documents over 100 years of medical history.

Old Town Salinas

Old Town Salinas has a plethora of stores for shopping. The facility is a good place to walk and take in the sites. On Saturdays, there is a farmer's market which offers plenty of certified organic foods. The first Friday of every month offers a well known art walk to celebrate the wide variety of art in the galleries.

Activities to Stay Active

Getting active and staying active is very important. Some facilities offer a free trial period and personal trainers who can help to customize a fitness plan for your specific needs. The municipal pool offers water aerobics and free lap swimming times. Golfing is another activity that is plentiful in Salinas. Salinas is surrounded by several fairways and country clubs with golf courses. Golf courses, gyms, health clubs and spas in and around Salinas offer discounts for seniors.
