Guttate psoriasis is a skin condition that causes teardrop shaped plaques to form all over the body. These plaques crust over with an oily, yellow to silver crust that is extremely itchy and irritated. Medical treatments involve the use of coal tar shampoos, cortisone steroidal creams and anti-itching lotions. Alternative treatments are also helpful in alleviating the symptoms of guttate psoriasis, and can complement medical treatments.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a plant native to the Southwestern area of the United States. This succulent plant stores water in its leafy branches, which is contained in a gel. When used on the skin, aloe vera gel is extremely soothing and anti-inflammatory. The redness and inflammation caused by guttate psoriasis can be treated by applying aloe vera gel to the skin. Although aloe vera does not eliminate guttate psoriasis from the skin, it successfully reduces some of the symptoms, such as flaking, redness and itching.
Sun Exposure
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, psoriasis plaques can be treated and reduced by regular exposure to sunlight. The UVB lightwaves in sunlight help dry up psoriasis and allow the condition to go into remission quicker. Sunlight exposure should be limited to 10 minutes to avoid causing sun damage to the skin. Because guttate psoriasis is located primarily on the trunk of the body, exposing the skin to sunlight can be more difficult. If sunlight exposure is difficult, dermatologists may recommend the application of an excimer laser, which delivers a concentrated beam of UVB lightwaves to the skin. This laser, which is approved by the FDA, can isolate and treat guttate psoriasis in smaller, difficult-to-reach locations.
Olive Oil Moisturizer
Removing the psoriasis plaques will help the skin go into remission. For psoriasis plaques to be removed, they must first be loosened. Olive oil, being a deeply emollient moisturizer for the skin, can be applied to guttate psoriasis scales to sufficiently hydrate and soften them. Spread olive oil onto the skin, covering the plaques, and allow it to remain on the skin for five to 10 minutes to soften them enough for removal. Once the scales are removed, the skin can be treated with a topical steroidal cream that a dermatologist can prescribe.
