Dark scars on the skin can occur from a burn scar, an acne scar, or a scar developing from a puncture wound or laceration. This type of scar can be very noticeable when located on the face, and people that develop these scars may seek ways to remove them. The good news about discoloration scars is that they can be easier to treat and remove than scars that create a lot of scar tissue and disfigure the skin. Many darkened scars exist near the top of the skin, making it easier to treat and remove the scar through non-invasive methods.
Step 1
Purchase a scar cream, ointment or gel proven to treat, fade and sometimes remove scars. These treatments, such as corticosteroids and antihistamine creams, can be very effective, particularly on new scarring, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Some may be available over-the-counter, but many effective scar creams will require a prescription from your doctor. It is best to consult a doctor or dermatologist before investing in a scar cream to make sure you get the best type of medication for your specific scar.
Step 2
Purchase a chemical peel kit and apply the treatment to your skin on your own, or visit a beauty salon or doctor's office to have the treatment professionally applied. This skin scar treatment treats scars existing on the top layers of your skin, such as pigment-related scars and other scars that may be dark in color. These peels use glycolic acid to burn off the top of your skin and stimulate new skin growth, which in most cases does not feature the same scarring. For some people, this can totally remove the darkened scar. Because you are handling acid close to the face, though, it is strongly advised you receive help to perform the peel, preferably from a health care professional.
Step 3
Receive a light or laser treatment from a doctor. These treatments are able to penetrate to deeper layers of the skin and eliminate scarring. Laser treatments are particularly effective at new scars, particularly those that are purplish in color--multiple treatments can help eliminate the discoloration and return your skin to a normal tone.
