Side Effects of Xenical for Weight Loss

Xenical is the brand product of orlistat available only through a prescription. It is used for weight loss in obese patients 12 years and older who have a body mass index over 30. The usual dose is 120mg three times a day with a meal containing fat. Use this medication in addition to a restricted diet and an exercise regimen. You may experience several side effects with this drug. Address any concerns to a physician before starting the medication.

Changes in Bowel Movements

Individuals on Xenical may experience side effects on the intestines. According to The Merck Manuals Online Medical Library, increased bowel movements are seen in 3 to 11 percent individuals and urgency to go is seen in 3 to 22 percent of individuals. You may also notice that your stools are fatty or oily. About 25 percent of individuals report stomach pain, oily spotting and passing gas with discharge. Pain or discomfort in the rectum has also been reported. These side effects usually occur in the first 1 to 2 months of therapy and improve over time. Avoid high fat meals to decrease gastrointestinal effects.

Headache and Back Pain

Headache is a common drug side effect that may occur in up to 31 percent of individuals. Back pain may occur in about 14 percent of patients. These adverse effects also decrease with continued use of the drug. If your headache or back pain is bothersome, you may use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen; however, ask a physician or pharmacist which medication is best for you. If these adverse reactions worsen or are not alleviated by medication, contact your physician.

Infection

Xenical may increase the risk of developing certain infections. Respiratory infections, which are characterized by cough, runny nose, sore throat, headache and fever, may occur in up to 38 of patients, reports the "Drug Information Handbook." About 40 percent of individuals may develop the flu, which has similar symptoms as respiratory infections but also includes body aches and chills. Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, may also develop in about 7 percent of individuals. The symptoms of UTIs include difficulty or pain upon urinating, urgency to urinate and cloudy urine. Women may develop vaginitis, which is inflammation or infection of the vagina described as itchiness, irritation, pain and swelling. If you experiences signs and symptoms of an infection, you should inform a physician right away. Your physician can examine you properly and decide if you have an infection and need further medical care.

Decreased VItamin Levels

Xenical decreases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, including A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. "Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach" explains that a multi-vitamin containing these vitamins should be administered once a day at least two hours before or after Xenical.
