The human immune system protects the body against disease and illness. It recognizes and attacks antigens, which are proteins present in bacteria, fungi and viruses, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. An immune system deficiency can increase the risk of illness and disease. Herbs and vitamins may help strengthen the body's immune system and prevent the occurrence of illness.

Check with your doctor before taking vitamins or herbs to address an immune system deficiency.

Step 1

Add dried ginseng to boiling water to make an immunity-boosting tea, and drink one or two cups per day. According to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs," ginseng contains chemical compounds that may increase white blood cell production. Proper white blood cell count is necessary for destroying antigens that can cause disease. Check with your physician before adding ginseng to your diet.

Step 2

Increase intake of citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, limes and lemons. According to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," these fruits are rich sources of vitamin C, which helps support healthy immune system function.

Step 3

Steep 2 tbsp. of dried echinacea root in 6 oz. of boiling water and drink as a tea twice per day. According to Castleman, the Plains Indians of North America used echinacea root as an immune system stimulant, as well as to treat wounds and snakebites. Echinacea may enhance the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria. Talk to your doctor before taking echinacea.

Step 4

Obtain vitamin A from food sources such as carrots, dandelion greens, sweet potatoes, spinach, papayas and asparagus. According to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, vitamin A is necessary for immune system function. Vitamin A is also an antioxidant that may protect the cells of the body against free radical damage.

Step 5

Use basil in pasta dishes, pesto, bread dips and other foods. According to Castleman, ancient Ayurvedic healers in India used basil to improve overall health and promote longevity. Basil may also enhance the ability of antibodies to neutralize bacteria and viruses. Consult your physician if you plan to use basil as an immune system stimulant.
