Dark circles and under eye wrinkles are a common problem. Dark circles are caused by a variety of factors, including sun exposure, skin thinning and heredity. Under eye wrinkles are accelerated by smoking, which changes the amount of blood that flows to the skin. As the skin ages, natural oil production also slows down, making under eye skin appear more wrinkled. Fortunately, there are lifestyle changes and treatments available to minimize the appearance of dark circles and under eye wrinkles.
Step 1
Increase the amount of sleep you get. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep each day. Try sleeping and waking at about the same time daily.
Step 2
Apply over-the-counter products to reduce fine lines under the eyes. Choose products with active ingredients kinetin, coenzymes and antioxidants. Apply as directed. In most cases, the product's results will fade if you stop using it.
Step 3
Use under eye gels with vitamin K, C, E and A to minimize the appearance of under eye darkness. Pumpkin slices, which contain vitamins A, C and K, may also minimize the appearance of dark under eye circles. Apply the pumpkin slices to the eyes for a few minutes.
Step 4
Elevate the head while sleeping. Lying down causes fluids to pool in the lower eyelids. As a result, eyes appear darker. Elevating the head by stacking a few pillows under it while you sleep may help.
Step 5
Use sunscreen under the eyes. Sun exposure may cause pigmentation changes resulting in dark circles. Sun exposure is also connected to the development of wrinkles. Some under eye creams have an SPF of 15 or higher. Using under eye creams may also minimize the appearance of creases and lines under the eyes.
Tips and Warnings
- If you struggle with allergies, it might be making skin discoloration under the eyes worse. Rinse sinuses with salt water daily to minimize nasal congestion.
- Smoking and drinking alcohol may contribute to dark circles and skin wrinkles. Consider scaling back on these habits to remedy this issue.
