Exhaustion is a term that describes both a physical and mental condition. It is the result of chronic stress and requires very individualized treatment. When your body is under stress, adrenal hormones are produced. These hormones help your body respond to stress, but according to Dr. Jacob Farin, a naturopathic physician, when chronic stress sets in, the adrenal hormones decrease and exhaustion develops.
Fatigue and Insomnia
Fatigue is the most common symptom of exhaustion. Chronic stress causes adrenal hormones to fluctuate during the day, notes Farin. Low levels of adrenal hormones cause you to feel tired and weak. High levels of these hormones often occur at night if you deal with exhaustion, and they have the opposite effect -- resulting in insomnia.
Irritability
Your physical and mental exhaustion may manifest in signs of irritability related to lack of sleep and the fluctuation of adrenal hormones. Irritability is also related to low levels of B vitamins, which are decreased when your body is under stress for an extended period of time.
Physical Symptoms
Exhaustion may cause you to experience physical problems such as headaches and muscle tension. Digestive issues may also occur, including irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea and nausea.
Memory Loss
Exhaustion may cause you to experience short-term memory loss. Inability to concentrate may also result from the stress, inability to sleep and hormonal changes. These symptoms can make it difficult for you to focus on work, family life or school.
