Cromolyn Sodium Side Effects

Cromolyn sodium is an anti-inflammatory medication used in many common asthma inhalation and allergy treatment therapies. It is sold under the brand names Intal, Intal Inhaler and Gastrocrom. The medication is designed to prevent and reduce symptoms of bronchial inflammation, tightness in the chest, wheezing and difficulty breathing in individuals diagnosed with asthma. However, like many medications, patients and doctors should discuss risks, benefits and contraindications for use. You may experience some side effects with use of cromolyn sodium, which you should discuss with your physician.

Tightness in Chest

People taking cromolyn sodium may experience tightening of the chest muscles and moderate to severe wheezing following inhalation of medication. This tightness is often described as as feeling of bands squeezing the chest. This tightness is caused by bronchospasms, which usually fade within a few seconds to minutes following the therapy.

Skin Irritation

Some people taking cromolyn sodium experience skin irritation ranging from a skin rash to numbness in the fingers and extremities. Muscle weakness, pain and tingling sensations are also common, as is skin tenderness and bruising. If you experience any such side effects, discuss them with your doctor so that dosage may be regulated. Do not decrease or alter your dose on your own, as this may cause worsening of complications or symptoms.

Pain

Pain and swollen glands or joints are also common side effects of cromolyn sodium for many patients. Swollen glands may be felt in the throat, and swollen joints as well as joint pain is often noted. Fever, itching and rash may also occur on various areas of the body, accompanied by feelings of general malaise or illness.

Additional Side Effects

If you're taking cromolyn sodium, you may also experience dry throats or irritation accompanied by a dry cough. The nose may be dry and bleed easily, and may or may not be accompanied by tearing or watery eyes and a stuffy feeling in the nasal passages. Some people find they feel dizzy or nauseous, while others complain of stomach pain, heartburn and drowsiness. Most comment on a funny or unpleasant taste in the mouth following the inhalation therapy. Other side effects may be felt by individuals, depending on dosage and frequency of use.
