Wendy's offers many convenient fast-food menu options, though the convenience may come at a nutritional cost. As with most fast-food restaurants, Wendy's provides many high-calorie, high-fat and high-sodium foods. Choosing an appropriate meal may be difficult depending upon your specific nutritional needs. The best plan to avoid the nutritional pitfalls at Wendy's is to keep your meal as small as possible.
Hamburgers
Wendy's offers a variety of hamburger selections, and the nutrition content depends largely upon the size of the sandwich. For example, according to Wendy's website, a ¼-pound hamburger contains 470 calories, 21 grams fat, 8g saturated fat, 1g trans fat and 880 milligrams sodium. The ¾-pound hamburger, on the other hand, contains 1,030 calories, 63g fat, 29g saturated fat, 3.5g trans fat and 1860mg sodium. Wendy's hamburgers are very high in total fat, saturated fat and trans fat, and getting the larger burger only makes the problem worse. According to Medline Plus, diets high in saturated and trans fat are linked to increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Chicken Sandwiches
Wendy's also offers many chicken sandwich options, and chicken is generally more heart-healthy than beef. However, a sandwich like the Chicken Club, for instance, is actually worse than the ¼-pound burger. A Chicken Club provides 630 calories, 31g fat, 10g saturated fat and 1,410mg sodium. The high sodium content of Wendy's sandwiches is concerning, as excess sodium intake is associated with high blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association.
Salads
Even a seemingly healthy salad contains excessive amounts of fat and sodium. Wendy's Baja Salad contains 740 calories, 47g fat, 17g saturated fat, 1.5g trans fat and 1,990mg sodium. That's more total fat than the restaurant's ½-pound burger, and more sodium than the ¾-pound burger. The one redeeming quality of the salad is that it is a good source of vitamins and minerals. Each salad contains 100 percent of the daily value of vitamin A, 50 percent of vitamin C, 50 percent of calcium and 30 percent of iron.
Fries
As fries accompany most meals at Wendy's, it is important to add their nutritional content to the total of the meal. A medium order of fries contains 410 calories, 19g fat, 3.5g saturated fat and 350mg sodium. That's roughly equivalent to the amount of calories and fat provided by a ¼-pound burger.
Frosty
The Frosty is a popular dessert item at Wendy's, and it provides a considerable amount of calories and fat, as well as sugar. One medium Frosty contains 410 calories, 10g fat, 7g saturated fat, 0.5g trans fat, 190mg sodium and 57g sugar. That alone is a large quantity of sugar, but it's actually only 1g more than the amount of sugar in a medium Coca-Cola, making your total sugar intake over 100g if you have a regular soft drink and a Frosty.
