Microdermabrasion is a process of skin rejuvenation used in the skin care community, and is a resurfacing treatment that works by gently abrading the top layer of your skin through applying micro aluminum oxide crystals or a diamond-tipped wand. This is a straightforward and non-invasive procedure that revitalizes dull and aged skin, helps reduce the appearance of large pores and reduces the fine lines that can appear around the eyes and mouth area. Acne scars and mild pigment irregularities, known as hyperpigmentation, can also be minimized through the proper use of microdermabrasion. The process of microdermabrasion can be completed with your dermatologist, a medical aesthetician or in home with a microdermabrasion kit.
Step 1
Keep the room where the microdermabrasion machine is used equipped with a 110 VAC, 15-amp minimum electrical service. It is also recommended that the electrical supply to the equipment be independently fused and switched by a 30-amp circuit breaker, suggests the manufacturers of Pro Micro Peel.
Step 2
Sustain a room temperature of 68 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 to 24 degrees Celsius. The recommended average temperature is 72 degrees F and humidity levels should remain around 30 to 60 percent. This is necessary to ensure proper cooling of the compressor and to keep airborne dust particles to a minimum.
Step 3
Apply the safety glasses, and then touch the wand to the face and slowly move the wand in an upward, circular motion around the face. Avoid the thin under-eye area. Crystals are sent through the wand and exfoliate the surface of the skin. The machine then sucks away spent crystals along with the exfoliated skin. Microdermabrasion wands are usually made of steel or glass and the top of the wand is what touches your skin.
Step 4
Apply an emollient-rich, hydrating moisturizer with an SPF minimum of 30. This protection is necessary, especially after the microdermabrasion, as the top skin layer has been removed, and the skin is red and more susceptible to sun damage. Use healing oils such as almond oil or jojoba oil to nourish the skin once daily.
