Cracked, dry feet occur from a variety of issues, including long-term neglect, diabetes, peripheral artery disease and other health issues, according to Discovery Health. Heel fissures or cracked heels, dry skin and calluses are common foot problems. These skin conditions are mainly a nuisance and a cosmetic issue, but if the cracks become deep, it may be painful and cause the skin to bleed or become infected. Daily care can reverse the issue, but contact a specialist if the problems become more severe.
Step 1
Wear shoes that offer plenty of support. Avoid wearing open-backed shoes or sandals.
Step 2
Smooth rough areas with a pumice stone daily after showering or bathing. Soak feet in water for 15 to 20 minutes to soften skin if you are unable to shower or bathe.
Step 3
Apply an oil-based moisturizing cream in a thick layer twice daily, especially after using the pumice stone. Wear socks, if possible, after applying the moisturizer to keep the moisture from evaporating. At night, wrap your feet in cellophane after moisturizing to assist with softening feet.
Remove any moisturizer left between your toes to prevent athlete's foot, a fungal infection, from developing.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult with a podiatrist if the condition not does start to improve. A podiatrist may recommend certain in-office procedures, prescription creams, insoles, heel cups or footwear solutions.
