The Best Cereals for Fiber

Dietary fiber can relieve constipation and lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. One way to increase fiber in your diet is by beginning the day with a high fiber cereal. Several popular cereals on the market provide more than 50 percent of the daily recommended intake of fiber for women, per serving.

Fiber One

Fiber One cereals, manufactured by General Mills, are a good source of fiber. The original flavor has 57 percent of the daily value of fiber per serving, with 14 g of fiber per one-half cup. It only has 60 calories and is sugar free. Fiber One is available in several flavors and textures, including Raisin Bran Clusters, Shredded Wheat, Caramel Delight and Honey Clusters. This cereal is versatile and can be added to hamburgers as a binder or in muffins in place of some of the flour.

Kashi

The Kashi company aims for sustainability, health and core values. The cereals are all natural and generally high in fiber and/or protein. They offer 24 different types of cold cereal products. For example, the company claims Kashi Go Lean Crisp has twice the amount of protein and fiber when compared to 200 other cereals on the market. One three-quarter cup serving has 9 g of protein, 8 g of fiber and 18 g of whole grains. Other Kashi brand cereals include Good Friends, with 8 g of fiber per cup and Granola, with 7 g of fiber per half cup.

Wheatena

Wheatena is a hot toasted wheat cereal product made by Homestat Farm. It was introduced in 1879 and is all natural. Wheatena has 5 g of fiber and 5 g of protein per one-third cup serving. It is also low in fat and sugar and is a certified kosher product. Wheatena can be used in many recipes also.

Uncle Sam Cereal

Uncle Sam Cereal is manufactured by Attune Foods. There are four varieties of cereal available and they feature fiber and omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds. One three-quarter cup serving of Uncle Sam Great Multi-Grains cereal has 6 g of fiber and 6 g of protein. The company also makes a hot oatmeal cereal that contains flaxseeds and wheat flakes incorporated into it. Each serving is sugar free and has 5 g of fiber and 5 g of protein.

Post Shredded Wheat

The Post company makes Post Shredded Wheat; the original biscuits have been available for over 100 years. They have no transfats or cholesterol, and contain 47 g of whole grain and 6 g of fiber per 2 biscuit serving. Post shredded wheat spoon size Wheat 'n Bran cereal has 57 g of whole grain and 8 g of fiber per 1 1/4 cup serving.
