Loose skin is a common condition, especially for people over the age of 40. Those excess folds of skin on your legs are not only unsightly but can lower your self-esteem. To treat the skin it is important to understand the underlying causes of loose skin and how to prevent the condition from progressing past the point it has already reached.

Weight fluctuations, dehydration, overexposure to the sun and just overall aging can cause the skin of your legs to loosen and hang. When you gain weight, your skin stretches out to accommodate the excess muscle mass or fat. If you lose that muscle mass or fat, you are left with excess skin that hangs. Rays from the sun break down the collagen in your skin, which in turn makes it wrinkly and loose. Dehydration causes your skin to lose its elasticity. As you get older, the supply of blood to your skin is reduced and results in it loosening and losing its youthful appearance.

A popular remedy for loose skin on the legs is cosmetic surgery. The procedures are carried out under general anesthesia and can take a couple of hours. Loose skin is removed, as well as the excess fat under your skin. This procedure carries with it risks of surgical complications and can be expensive.

Using lasers to treat the skin can be effective if the condition is not severe. The treatment is used to rejuvenate and resurface skin. It is performed by a dermatologist under local anesthesia and involves the application of high-powered light to the loose skin on your legs. This can treat moderate cases of leg wrinkles and loose skin. It is not effective in cases of considerable weight fluctuations.

Dermatologists now can use infrared light to remedy loose skin. The light is used to stimulate the middle layer of your skin to produce collagen.The outer layer of skin is kept intact as by using a cool device during the procedure. In some patients, tightening of the loose leg skin is visible after the first treatment, while in others it may require a few treatments. The treatment results last about 12 months.
