How to Find a Good Elliptical Machine

If you're looking for home exercise equipment, you may have decided that an elliptical is the right machine for your needs. Elliptical machines avoid putting stress on your joints by allowing you to move in a fluid motion. While working out, you can adjust the resistance as well as choose a workout routine. Furthermore, the machines function in both forward and reverse motions. Due to the large number of elliptical machines on the market, it may seem daunting to choose the right one.

Step 1

Determine the stride length for the elliptical machines you are considering. Lower end versions may only have a stride length of 12 inches, which may make your movements feel choppy. Better models will have a stride length of 17 inches or more.

Step 2

Look at the type of resistance the elliptical machine uses. The two choices will be either belt tension or magnetic resistance. Belts can require a lot of maintenance and may not hold up over time. Magnetic resistance requires less maintenance and is controlled by the elliptical machine's display.

Step 3

Check out the features of the elliptical trainers. Look for a version that includes a heart monitor. Your heart rate will be taken by gripping sensors on the bars of the trainer. Additional features to consider include built-in workouts, timers and calorie counters.

Step 4

Test out elliptical trainers. Test several models at a fitness equipment store. Note the smoothness and ease of use when testing out each model.

Step 5

Read reviews of elliptical machines at Consumer Search (see Resources). Look at feedback from other users, in addition to the reviews by the editors.
