Holiday snack foods can be used at parties, taken to work, shared at school or served to your family. Parents can spend time with their children to create holiday snacks. The time spent together can help increase the bond between you and your child. Also, making a holiday snack can become a family tradition that you and your family continue year after year. It is important to remember that you can make holiday snacks that contain healthy nutrients.
Toasted Pumpkin Seeds
Take the pumpkin seeds right from the pumpkins you carve and toast them in the oven to make a healthy holiday snack. Clean the flesh of the pumpkin from the pumpkin seeds. Spread the pumpkins seeds evenly across a baking sheet and sprinkle them with salt or other flavored spices to fit your palate. The "Real Simple" magazine website suggests flavoring the pumpkin seeds with cinnamon and sugar to make them sweet.
Pumpkin seeds contain valuable amounts of healthy monounsaturated fat that has been attributed to lowering bad cholesterol levels and reducing your chance of heart disease.
Holiday Pie Cutouts
Disney Family Fun suggests creating pre-made pie crust treats in the shape of autumn leaves. Buy pre-made pie crusts and roll them out to 1/8-inch thickness, notes Disney Family Fun. Then, cut shapes from the pie dough in a shape that is relevant to the holiday you are celebrating. You will need to cut out pairs for each shape because you are going to bake them on top of each other with a filling inside.
Fill the pie cut-out with your desired filling. Some possibles include peanut butter, chocolate or berries. Then, place the matching cut-out on top and seal them together. Rub them with melted butter and sprinkle sugar, if desired. Disney Family Fun suggests baking them at 375 degrees F for no more than 12 minutes.
Dipped Bananas
Dip bananas in chocolate to create a festive holiday snack. Use melted dark chocolate and melted white chocolate that has been colored with the food coloring specific to the holiday. Slide wooden slicks into the base of the peeled banana. Then, dip the bananas part way into either colored chocolate.
Alternate the type of chocolate used on each banana. Add more holiday colors to decorate the dipped banana. Once the first coat of chocolate has hardened, dip again with colorful accents of the opposite chocolate color.
Display these bananas by sticking the exposed end of the stick into a candy corn filled vase or a fake skull or pumpkin with floral foam hidden inside for Halloween. Use a vase filled with peppermints for Christmas. For the Fourth of July, have the dipped bananas sticking out of a festively colored hat with floral foam hidden inside. Serve these chocolate covered bananas at a child's holiday party. The dipped banana will provide a healthier alternative to the usual holiday cakes, candies and cookies.
