The term "hair clip" may conjure up images of the plastic hair accessories that your mother used to use when you were a child. But hair clips have been updated and modernized to become a must-have in the hair accessory department. Gone are the days of kitschy banana clips and child-like barrettes; instead, designers are rolling out vintage and bejeweled clips that add something extra to your hairstyle. With so many designs, it's almost impossible to wear them the same way twice.
Everyday
While running errands and going about your daily business, a hair clip can give your regular, boring hair a little refinement. Pick up some jeweled bobby pins, and use them to tuck your hair behind your ear and secure. Add a large, beribboned clip or a flower clip to bring some life to your everyday ponytail. Pull up your hair into a messy bun and nestle in a butterfly clip to accent it. Pull your hair out of your eyes by using a simple colored bobby pin slid into your bangs to keep it away, or use it to create volume with your bangs pulled up and puffed on the top of your head. You can keep your hair out of your eyes in a fashionable way with an arsenal of just-right hair clips.
Occasion
Hair clips dress up your hair for a more formal occasion. If you go to an accessory store, you'll see a large variety of specialty hair clips that work well for a wedding, concert, event or night out with the girls. Peacock hair clips look good clipped over the ear with a curly hairstyle. Large clips with netting attached add drama to a regular hairstyle. Vintage combs dress up hair for a respectable occasion where you need to make a good first impression. Or, clip the hair clip on a chain for an interesting pendant.
Business
Just because hair clips are a little on the whimsical side doesn't mean you can't wear them to work. Choose a few hair clips that are completely functional, that will keep your hair up in a professional manner, and that you won't have to fiddle with during the day. Some hair clips offer rubberized jaws so that they're less likely to slip. Even jeweled hair clips look appropriate when placed on the head in a non-obvious way, like at the back of a ponytail or behind the ear. If you have a hair clip that you like but think it's too wild to wear at the office, clip it onto your bag or suit jacket for a last-minute brooch.
