Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus and usually erupt on the lips or near the mouth. It takes seven to 10 days for fever blisters to resolve. Faster cures for fever blisters can be found in a drugstore product--or by getting a doctor's prescription.
Before the Blister
Most people who get fever blisters experience a "prodrome"--a tingling sensation or skin sensitivity-- one or two days before the lesions erupt. Many treatments exert optimal benefits when used during prodrome.
Docosanol Topical Treatment
Over-the-counter anesthetic balms can relieve fever blister pain. The ASHA notes one product, Abreva (docosanol), is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to help fever blisters heal rapidly. It should be applied as soon as the first tingle begins.
Topical Antivirals
The prescription topical antivirals acyclovir ointment and penciclovir cream can also be applied to the skin during prodrome or on fever blisters. Both speed healing.
Oral Antivirals
Prescription oral antivirals acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir aid in faster healing. The ASHA indicates a one-day, two-dose treatment of valacyclovir is effective in treating fever blisters if taken during early onset.
Call A Doctor
Fever blisters can be particularly dangerous in those with weakened immune systems or when lesions appear near the eyes. A medical consultation might be necessary when symptoms are severe.
