Hyperpigmentation, a condition marked by dark patches of skin, often occurs due to sun damage or hormonal changes, such as from pregnancy or birth control pill use, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Remedies to cure the skin of such dark patches usually involve sun protection, topical creams or visiting a dermatologist for more intensive treatments. These remedies work by fading the skin through slowing the production of melanin, the substance that gives skin its color.
Step 1
Apply an anti-aging or fading cream containing hydroquinone daily to the areas containing darkened skin. Smooth on the cream evenly. Other fading creams that may prove useful include products containing alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C, retinoids and azelaic acid.
Step 2
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen -- one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays -- daily to all exposed skin to prevent dark skin spots from worsening and to prevent further sun damage.
Step 3
Visit a dermatologist for in-office treatment options if topical creams do not improve your skin's appearance. Your dermatologist will likely recommend resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels, cryotherapy or lasers.
